SIM cards, bank accounts and mobile payments in China: prepare a backup

The short answer

Plan a way to communicate and pay during your first days before every local service is set up. Use official providers and verify identity requirements; never share verification codes with someone offering to “activate” an account.

Prepare communication before arrival

Check what your current mobile plan covers and keep the university and accommodation contacts available offline. At an authorised mobile provider, ask about identity requirements, the plan duration, data allowance and cancellation. Avoid registering a number under another person’s identity just to save time.

Set up banking through official channels

Ask an authorised bank about the account options and documents available for your student status. Confirm fees, card use and how to recover access if a phone is lost. A government living guide is a useful overview, but it does not guarantee that every branch accepts the same documents or opens an account immediately.

Put this guide into practice

Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.

  • Official provider, identity requirements and recovery process
  • A usable payment and communication backup on arrival
  • Consistent names and evidence of relevant nationality history

Check payment setup and limits

Official guidance describes several payment methods for foreign visitors and residents. If linking an overseas card to a payment app, read the supported-card rules, charges and transaction limits in the app’s current help. Have an alternative method while verification is pending. Never give a stranger your password or one-time code.

Keep records and emergency access

Retain bank and mobile-provider contact details separately from the phone. Know how to block a card or SIM and recover an account. Test a small ordinary payment before relying on one app for every expense. Your tuition payment may need a different method, so confirm that directly with the university.

Requirements depend on the university, programme, intake and your circumstances.

FAQ

Should I assume I can pay university tuition with any mobile app?

No. Confirm the institution’s accepted payment method, deadline and any transaction limits in advance.
