China student visas: X1, X2 and your arrival checklist

The short answer

X1 is for study lasting more than 180 days; X2 is for study of no more than 180 days. Your course, documents and local consulate determine the application. A visa requiring a residence permit triggers an arrival deadline.

Choose the category from the course

Use the actual course duration and the university’s visa-document instructions. The embassy guidance explains the basic X1/X2 categories, but its local submission procedure is for Uganda. Find the Chinese consulate or visa centre serving your legal residence for the current checklist, appointment rules and fees.

Check the university-issued documents

Confirm that your name, dates and passport details match the admission documents. Ask the university which study confirmation document it will issue and how you will receive it. Do not substitute a consultant’s invitation for the required official admission evidence. Keep readable copies and follow the consulate’s instructions about originals.

Prepare for what happens after entry

For entry that requires a residence permit, apply within 30 days of arrival. Coordinate university registration, accommodation registration and any required medical verification so they can be completed in time. Ask the international office which local exit-entry office handles the campus. Keep your passport arrangements in mind before booking travel.

Avoid treating permission as interchangeable

A student visa does not automatically permit employment. Visa-free tourism is not a substitute for ordinary degree-study formalities. If your course duration changes, or you transfer institutions, ask the university and immigration authority what must be updated before relying on the original permission.

Put this guide into practice

Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.

  • Degree, language study, teacher training or research visit
  • Competent visa office for your lawful application location
  • Actual course duration and enrolment category

Visa-free entry and study in China: distinguish a visit from enrolment

Nationality, residence and application location are three different questions

Your passport affects visa eligibility. Your lawful residence and the consular district determine which office can receive the application. The language of this website does not select that office. For example, a French citizen living legally in Tokyo should check the Japan application rules and provide residence evidence; using the French site does not make Paris the correct filing location. Confirm acceptance of your circumstances before opening a visa account.

Get the university documents before starting the visa application

X1 is for study lasting more than 180 days; X2 is for study of no more than 180 days. Ask the university to confirm the course dates, admission letter and required study confirmation form. The US Embassy lists JW201/JW202 for higher-education X1 applicants, and an admission notice plus DQ, if available, for X2. Do not assume that every consulate asks for the same originals or that a scholarship nomination is an admission letter.

An online review is a checkpoint, not an issued visa

Keep checking the account for requests to correct the form or upload extra documents. Tokyo, Paris and Berlin currently allow counter submission without an appointment after their stated online approval step. Madrid uses its own passport-submission status and may request a video interview. Follow the selected office’s current instructions for interviews, passport delivery and any appointment; do not apply another city’s procedure.

Keep the appointment and arrival stages in the same plan

Japan, France, Germany and Spain have temporary fingerprint exemptions for qualifying short-term applications through 31 December 2026; X1 remains subject to fingerprint rules. An exemption does not automatically authorize postal filing. For X1, arrange the student residence-permit application with the university and local exit-entry authority within 30 days of entering China. A visa, admission decision and residence permit are separate steps.

Where to begin when applying from these five countries

Application locationTerritory / office to verifyOnline step and passport submission
JapanCheck the prefecture: Tokyo and Kanagawa fall under the embassy; Osaka and Kyoto under Osaka; Aichi under Nagoya.Use the assigned office’s route. In Tokyo: online form and uploads → online review completed → print the certificate and submit the passport; no counter appointment currently required.
United StatesChoose the embassy or consulate by your state of residence. Texas belongs to the Washington embassy’s district; New York State to the New York consulate.Washington uses the new COVA portal at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/. Wait for Passport to be submitted, then deliver the passport, barcode info-page and requested originals during office hours.
FranceRead the Paris procedure. Marseille’s consulate currently directs visa applicants to Paris; applicants in overseas territories should confirm their competent consulate.Select Paris, complete the online form and uploads, and finish the offline-payment confirmation. After online approval and its confirmation email, print the application certificate and submit the passport; no counter appointment currently required.
GermanyCheck your Land and the relevant consular district: Berlin and Saxony are in the embassy district; Bavaria is in the Munich district.Select the appropriate visa centre. Berlin currently uses online review completed → certificate / printed pages / passport submission without a counter appointment. A requested video interview has its own appointment.
SpainThe Barcelona consulate’s current guidance sends applicants to the Spain–Madrid online route.Select Madrid, upload the form and documents, wait for Pendiente de presentación del pasaporte, and follow the centre’s delivery instructions. Print the first and last form pages and sign as required.

Keep three document checks separate

CheckWhat to obtainWhat must still be confirmed
Study categoryCourse dates, admission letter and the school’s visa documents.X1 / X2 category and whether JW201, JW202 or DQ is requested by your office.
Residence outside your passport countryCurrent residence permit or other accepted lawful-stay evidence, plus local address evidence where requested.Acceptance by the selected office. Tokyo lists the original residence card for third-country long-term residents; the US lists documents such as a green card, visa, I-20 or I-94.
Passport and supporting documentsA passport meeting the selected office’s validity / blank-page rules, compliant photo and requested originals.Name consistency, previous passports or Chinese documents, translations and additional case-specific evidence.

Requirements depend on the university, programme, intake and your circumstances.
