About the university
A Beijing university specializing in foreign languages and international studies, with broader teaching in related humanities and professional fields.
Beijing Foreign Studies University traces its origins to a Russian-language teaching unit established in 1941. After several institutional changes, it became Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in 1954 and merged with Beijing Russian Institute in 1959. Responsibility moved from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Ministry of Education in 1980; the present university name was adopted in 1994. Foreign-language education remains its defining academic focus, supported by related work in law, economics, management and other fields. Its official profile identifies Project 211 and Double First-Class participation. It also names a Project 985 innovation platform; that designation must not be confused with membership of the original Project 985 university list.
