CSC Scholarship Type A vs Type B: What Is the Difference?

Compare CSC Type A and Type B routes, receiving authorities and university procedures before choosing where to apply.

What you need to know

Type A applies through the designated dispatching authority; Type B through a Chinese university. The recipient sets the agency number and submission steps. Beihang’s closed 2026 example required both university and CSC submissions, not one form.

Who receives the file under each route

In the bilateral Type A route, the dispatching authority designated for the applicant’s country handles the application or nomination. It might be an embassy or an education body. Under Type B, the designated Chinese university screens candidates and recommends them. The category is therefore a routing decision, not a promise that Type B has a larger allowance.

The correct agency number belongs to that recipient. Beihang’s 2026 example prescribes Type B and number 10006. This is an institution-specific historical example; it must not be copied into an application to a different university or a different funding route.

A university application may still be required

Beihang explicitly required submission in both its university system and the CSC system. It also required the uploaded information to agree. Finishing the CSC form alone would therefore have left that application incomplete. A Type A authority can have its own separate delivery or nomination instructions, so neither category guarantees that one website is enough.

A useful submission record contains the recipient, category, agency number, required university procedure and evidence of completion. Do not infer the correct workflow from the number of universities a portal lets an applicant select. The receiving notice defines the actual procedure.

Put this guide into practice

Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.

  • Body that receives and reviews the application
  • Separate university and scholarship submission references
  • Category and agency number supplied by the recipient

Choosing a route without inventing success rates

There is no verified percentage in these notices showing that one route is easier for every nationality or programme. Type A may involve country-level nomination; Type B involves institution-level screening and academic fit. Both can be competitive. A route unavailable to the applicant cannot be made suitable by entering another agency number.

For an applicant choosing between two genuine options, compare eligibility, the actual recipient’s deadline and whether concurrent applications are permitted. Compare the final benefits afterwards. This keeps selection of the route separate from the financial value of a possible scholarship.

This comparison describes application routes. It does not assign a universal quota, success rate or benefit level.

Type A: the dispatching authority

For Type A, the government department, embassy or other dispatching authority specified for your country receives or manages the application. Its nationality rules, nomination process and local checklist matter alongside central CGS rules. A preference in the CSC system does not replace the authority’s required submission, interview or nomination. The local announcement is the starting point.

Type B: university screening and nomination

For Type B, the designated university screens eligible applicants and may nominate them to CSC. A university can restrict an award to particular graduate subjects, teaching languages or applicant groups. University admission requirements still apply. Being accepted academically does not mean you are already selected for funding, and a supervisor’s positive reply is not a scholarship award letter.

FAQ

Does choosing Type B remove the need for a university application?

Not necessarily. Some university routes require both the institution’s application and the CSC submission. Complete the combination stated in that host’s current notice; the category alone does not tell you which systems are mandatory.
