About the university
A Ministry of Education university in Beijing with a longstanding focus on international Chinese-language education, language research and cross-cultural study.
Established in 1962 as a preparatory school for international students, Beijing Language and Culture University developed from earlier training activities for Chinese and overseas learners. It became Beijing Language Institute in 1964 and adopted the Beijing Language and Culture University name in 1996. Its Chinese name changed to 北京语言大学 in 2002 while the English name was retained. International Chinese-language education remains central to its work, alongside language and literature, linguistics, regional studies and other disciplines. For an applicant, this history makes it relevant to compare both Chinese-language courses and degree programs, which have different entry rules. Its international admissions office publishes the current program and scholarship requirements.
