About the university
A university rooted in teacher education, with an institutional history beginning in 1902.
Beijing Normal University began in 1902 as the education department of the Imperial University of Peking. The school became independent in 1908 and took the name National Beijing Normal University in 1923. Its development included the merger of Peking Women’s Normal University in 1931 and Fu Jen Catholic University in 1952. It adopted its present name in 1949. BNU’s history is closely associated with teacher preparation and the study of education, while its academic scope has expanded into a broader university. It joined Project 211 in 1996, Project 985 in 2002 and the Double First-Class initiative in 2017. Its official overview distinguishes its Beijing and Zhuhai campuses.
