About the university

A Shanghai university founded in 1951, combining teacher education with a broad research portfolio.

East China Normal University was established in Shanghai on 16 October 1951. Its foundation brought together Daxia University and Guanghua University with departments from several other institutions, including St John’s, Fudan, Tongji and Zhejiang universities. It temporarily became Shanghai Normal University after a merger in 1972 and restored the East China Normal University name in 1980. Later developments included a graduate school in 1986, participation in Project 211 in 1996 and Project 985 in 2006, and entry into the Double First-Class initiative in 2017. Education remains central to its identity, within a wider academic range covering humanities, sciences and other disciplines. Its July 2026 overview also records construction of the Lingang campus.
