About the university
A university established in Harbin in 1920, with a long history in engineering education.
Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in 1920. It became a national model institution in 1951 and was selected for key national development in 1954. These stages helped establish its long-standing emphasis on engineering education and technical research. HIT joined Project 211 in 1996 and was among the first nine Project 985 universities in 1999. In 2000 it merged with Harbin University of Architecture. It entered the Double First-Class initiative in 2017, with eight disciplines included in the initiative’s 2022 round. HIT is overseen by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Its university website separately identifies Harbin, Weihai and Shenzhen campuses; applicants should confirm the campus and admissions arrangements of their chosen programme.
