About the university
A comprehensive research university in Wuhan formed by a major merger in 2000.
Huazhong University of Science and Technology took its present institutional form in May 2000, when the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute merged. Its engineering lineage includes the decision to establish Huazhong Institute of Technology in Wuhan in 1952; its medical lineage reaches back to a German medical school founded in Shanghai in 1907. The merger brought engineering, medicine and urban construction into one university. Today HUST is a comprehensive research institution under the Ministry of Education, with its main and medical campuses in Wuhan. It has participated in Project 211, Project 985 and the Double First-Class initiative.
