About the university
A university whose history begins with Sanjiang Normal School in Nanjing in 1902.
Nanjing University traces its institutional history to Sanjiang Normal School, established in 1902. Its development passed through several names and forms, including Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeastern University and National Central University. It adopted the name Nanjing University in 1950. During China’s nationwide restructuring of higher education in 1952, it integrated with Jinling University and moved from Sipailou to Jinling’s former Gulou site. Its official history therefore connects teacher training, the expansion of modern university education and a major mid-century reorganisation. The university now publishes information for its Nanjing campuses and its Suzhou campus, so applicants should check the location of their particular programme.
