About the university
A comprehensive university founded in Tianjin in 1919, with a history spanning arts and sciences.
Nankai University was founded in 1919 by Zhang Boling and Yan Xiu. It moved to Balitai in Tianjin in 1923. After the campus was destroyed during the war in 1937, Nankai relocated to south-western China and joined Peking and Tsinghua universities in the National Southwest Associated University in 1938. It returned to Tianjin in 1946 and reopened as a national university. The 1952 restructuring strengthened its combined arts and science structure. Later milestones include Project 211 in 1995, Project 985 in 2000 and the Double First-Class initiative in 2017. Its Jinnan campus came into operation in 2015. The university now publishes separate addresses for its Balitai and Jinnan locations.
