About the university
A comprehensive university in Beijing with degree and non-degree study across the humanities, sciences, social sciences, engineering and medicine.
Established in 1898 as the Imperial University of Peking, Peking University was renamed in 1912. Its role expanded beyond its early responsibilities for national education as modern departments developed. The nationwide reorganization of higher education in 1952 reshaped the university around teaching and research in the humanities and sciences and incorporated resources from Yenching University. A merger with Beijing Medical University in 2000 added a substantial medical education and research component. Today its academic organization spans humanities, social sciences, economics and management, sciences, information technology and engineering, and health sciences. International applicants can explore degree, visiting-student and language-study routes through the university’s International Students Division.
