About the university
A Beijing university with a historical and academic focus on the humanities and social sciences.
Renmin University of China traces its history to Shaanbei Public School, which opened in 1937. Subsequent predecessor institutions included North China United University, founded in 1939, and North China University, inaugurated in 1948. The central government approved the establishment of Renmin University in December 1949, and the university held its opening ceremony in October 1950. Its early departments included economics, planning, finance, trade, law and diplomacy. After reopening in 1978, it restored and developed departments across philosophy, history, journalism, law, literature and economics. These stages explain its continuing emphasis on the humanities and social sciences, alongside its later development of science and engineering subjects.
