About the university

A Shanghai university with engineering roots and a broad present-day academic portfolio that includes sciences, management, humanities and medicine.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University began as Nanyang College in Shanghai in 1896, with an early emphasis on engineering education. A series of organizational changes led to the Chiao Tung University structure in 1921. Following the later division of its Shanghai and Xi’an branches, the Shanghai institution took its current name in 1959. The Minhang campus opened in 1985. Further expansion included Shanghai Agricultural College in 1999 and Shanghai Second Medical University in 2005, the latter forming its School of Medicine. These developments connect the university’s engineering background with a broader range of academic and professional study. International admissions and scholarship procedures are published through the university’s Study@SJTU resources.
