About the university
A comprehensive research university in Chengdu formed through major institutional mergers.
Sichuan University traces its origins to the Sichuan Chinese and Western School, founded in 1896. Its current structure developed through two major mergers. In 1994 Sichuan University and Chengdu University of Science and Technology combined as Sichuan Union University; the institution returned to the Sichuan University name in 1998. In 2000 it merged with West China University of Medical Sciences, whose own history began with West China Union University in 1910. These strands brought together humanities, technical education and medicine. The university is based in Chengdu, Sichuan, with Wangjiang, Huaxi and Jiang’an campuses. Its official introduction describes it as a comprehensive research university under the Ministry of Education and a Double First-Class institution.
