About the university

A research university originating in Peiyang University, established in Tianjin in 1895.

Tianjin University traces its history to Peiyang University, founded in Tianjin in October 1895. Its early teaching covered law, engineering, mining and mechanical subjects. The institution changed names several times and relocated during the war, becoming part of temporary university arrangements in north-western China. Its teachers and students returned to Tianjin in 1946. In 1951 Peiyang University and Hebei Institute of Technology merged, and the resulting institution received the Tianjin University name. Engineering remains a central part of its academic profile, alongside science, humanities, management and other fields. Its official introduction records participation in Project 211, Project 985 and the Double First-Class initiative, and identifies the Weijin Road and Peiyangyuan campuses.
