About the university
A comprehensive research university in Shanghai, originating in German medical education in 1907.
Tongji University began in Shanghai in 1907 with a German medical school founded by physician Erich Paulun. In 1912 the medical school and a German engineering school combined, bringing medicine and engineering into the same institution. It adopted the Tongji University name in 1923 and became a national university in 1927. These developments explain both its early international connections and its long association with technical and professional education. Tongji is now a comprehensive research university directly administered by the Ministry of Education and jointly supported with Shanghai. Its official introduction describes work in areas including transport infrastructure, water management, architecture and sustainable campus development.
