About the university
A comprehensive research university in Beijing whose academic development connects engineering and science with the humanities, social sciences, arts and medicine.
Founded in 1911, Tsinghua began as a preparatory institution before adding a university section in 1925 and adopting the National Tsing Hua University name in 1928. During the war it joined Peking and Nankai universities in the institution that became the National South-West Associated University in Kunming, returning to Beijing in 1946. The national restructuring of 1952 made Tsinghua a polytechnic university. From 1978, it rebuilt and expanded fields including sciences, humanities, law and economic management. The Central Academy of Arts and Design joined in 1999, and the graduate school of the People’s Bank of China joined in 2012. Its present academic range therefore extends well beyond its engineering foundations.
