About the university
A science and technology university founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, based in Hefei, Anhui.
The University of Science and Technology of China was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing in 1958. Its founding brought university education into close contact with the Academy’s scientific research resources. USTC moved to Hefei, Anhui, in 1970, where it remains based. In 1978 it established a graduate school and introduced its programme for exceptionally young students. Later milestones include the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, launched in 1983, participation in Project 211 in 1995 and Project 985 in 1999, and entry into the Double First-Class initiative in 2017. Its institutional history centres on scientific training and interdisciplinary technology research.
