About the university
A comprehensive university in Wuhan with origins in the Ziqiang Institute of 1893.
Wuhan University traces its beginnings to the Ziqiang Institute, established by Zhang Zhidong in 1893. It developed through a series of institutional changes before becoming Wuhan National University in 1928. By 1946 its academic structure included arts, law, science, engineering, agriculture and medicine. A major merger in 2000 brought together Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University. The resulting university spans the humanities, sciences, engineering and health-related disciplines. Based near East Lake and Luojia Mountain in Wuhan, it is directly administered by the Ministry of Education and has participated in Project 211, Project 985 and the Double First-Class initiative.
