About the university
A public university founded by Tan Kah Kee in Xiamen in 1921.
Xiamen University was established by Tan Kah Kee in 1921. Originally a privately founded institution, it became a national university in 1937. Its charter identifies Xiamen University as its official English name and describes the institution as a public, non-profit university. The university’s registered address is in Siming District, Xiamen, Fujian. Its campus structure includes Siming, Zhangzhou, Xiang’an and Malaysia, so the university name alone does not establish where a particular programme is taught. The charter sets out responsibilities covering higher education, scientific research, cultural development and international cooperation. Its present institutional framework therefore connects a history of overseas Chinese educational philanthropy with public university governance and an international campus network.
