About the university

A comprehensive research university in Hangzhou whose present structure grew from the 1998 merger of four institutions.

Zhejiang University traces its founding to Qiushi Academy in 1897. The institution became National Chekiang University in 1928, then underwent major changes during wartime and the nationwide restructuring of higher education in the 1950s. In 1998, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University merged to form the present institution. This history helps explain its broad academic structure rather than a single specialist identity. Its official milestones also record the development of scientific and engineering research through the twentieth century. International students should use the separate international admissions catalog to identify available degree routes, teaching languages and the funding conditions that apply to their selected program.
