Read the curriculum as a preparation checklist
Identify the mathematical, technical or disciplinary knowledge expected at entry. Compare it with what your transcript actually shows. A strong general grade does not explain every subject prerequisite. If you are changing fields, ask whether bridging study is accepted and describe the relevant work you have already completed.
Check the research route
For a research degree, follow the department’s instructions about supervisor contact. Read recent work from the group and prepare a short explanation of fit. A positive email conversation is useful evidence of interest, but it is not an admission letter or a funding contract. Keep the formal application process in your calendar.
Confirm the teaching and research locations
Ask which campus and facilities the programme uses and where international-student housing is offered. Include the commute in a normal study week. If a laboratory or placement involves another location, ask about access, language and required training before assuming you can participate immediately.
Keep practical and academic questions together
A comparison should include course content, teaching language, supervisor process, campus and budget. For example, two programmes with similar titles may expect very different prior training. Resolve the difference with each department rather than choosing only from a general university ranking.
Put this guide into practice
Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.
- Exact programme and intended intake
- Supervisor contact rules and evidence of research fit
- University check-in and required immigration formalities
The programme catalogue changes the comparison
SJTU's 2026 English-taught master's catalogue distinguishes programme, campus, duration and fee unit. The examples below show why the same Shanghai university name can lead to different daily journeys and financial commitments. Use the exact programme code when contacting the department. These are historical catalogue examples; a 2027 programme, campus or price must be confirmed in the new catalogue.
Read the language and supervisor rules at programme level
The 2026 graduate guide's self-funded deadline was 2026-05-31 and has passed. Its language document includes department and programme exceptions, so one IELTS or HSK number is not a universal SJTU threshold. Likewise, a supervisor-acceptance form applies only where the chosen department requires it. Check both documents alongside the programme catalogue before arranging tests or contacting a research group.
SJTU Scholarship Payments: October 2026 Check-In and First Stipend
SJTU’s published payment schedule links the 10–15 October 2026 check-in to November stipend payment before 10 November. This is a host-specific procedure, not a national CSC calendar. The same schedule lists November check-in for the following month’s payment. First registration, bank details and required monthly confirmation affect disbursement. Spring 2027 arrangements remain subject to a separate schedule.

Keep annual fees and full-programme fees separate. Confirm the 2027 catalogue before applying. University application, insurance, housing and Noka's service fee are additional.
Requirements depend on the university, programme, intake and your circumstances.
