Tuition and living costs in China: build your own cost sheet

The short answer

Use current university charges and realistic housing options to estimate the full cost. There is no single reliable monthly budget that fits every Chinese city, campus and student.

Separate price from timing

For tuition and other institutional charges, record the amount, currency, period covered and payment date. Keep official application charges separate from optional consultant fees. Add test and document costs only when they are required for your route. A cheap-looking first payment can hide a larger total commitment.

Estimate housing and daily costs locally

Compare a confirmed dormitory option with a private-housing backup. Include utilities, deposits, transport, food and communication. A campus outside the centre can change both rent and commuting. Avoid presenting a broad city estimate as a fixed quote; verify the choices you can actually access.

Use three scenarios

Make a basic, comfortable and unexpected-change scenario using your own figures. The last might include a temporary room or an extra document step. Decide which costs you can reduce and which must be protected. A modest reserve helps you avoid making hurried decisions after arrival.

Review the budget with the course length

Multiply recurring expenses by the planned duration and account for breaks, research extensions where relevant and travel. Mark scholarship items as confirmed only after an award. If the budget fails without an award or unapproved income, compare another route before committing.

Put this guide into practice

Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.

  • Full study duration and the period covered by each quote
  • Payments due before enrolment or the first stipend
  • Cost you must cover if funding is delayed or not awarded

Full Scholarship vs Partial Scholarship in China

Build the budget by programme, period and payee

A university’s tuition is not Noka’s service fee. The official examples below use CNY and carry their own academic year and charging period. Obtain a written quotation for your programme, then add the application fee, insurance, housing, deposits, travel and document costs. A semester language course and a four-year degree cannot be compared by one displayed tuition figure.

Do the arithmetic before converting currencies

In a fictional five-month plan, a living-cost allowance of CNY 2,500 a month is CNY 12,500. It is a student-selected assumption, not an official city budget. Add only confirmed amounts in the same currency and for the same period. Keep uncertain dormitory or travel costs open, and maintain a contingency. Do not subtract a scholarship until an award and its coverage are confirmed.

TDLI Scholarships: Top-Ups, Insurance and Arrival Cash Flow

SJTU’s Tsung-Dao Lee Institute explains supplementary funding, payment timing and insurance separately. Those details matter when comparing a headline stipend with usable support. TDLI permits supplementary support without duplicating the same funding category, to reach its stated support standard. This is not a universal permission to combine awards. Other schemes can expressly prohibit concurrent funding.

Scholarship Application Fees: Why a Tuition Waiver Is Not a Fee Waiver

A scholarship can cover tuition without exempting you from the application fee. The exact scheme and university determine whether an applicant must pay. SIGS’s 2027 notice sets a CNY 800 application fee, including CSC applicants, and describes it as non-refundable. UCAS’s own 2026 scholarship includes an application-fee waiver. These examples cannot be merged into a national rule.

Published tuition examples with their actual charging period

Programme / yearUniversity chargesBoundary
ECNU Standard Chinese, spring 2027CNY 12,000 per semesterNon-degree course; insurance, housing and Noka fees separate
Nanjing undergraduate 2027: humanitiesCNY 21,000 per yearChinese-taught degree; CNY 500 application and CNY 400 insurance per semester
Nanjing undergraduate 2027: science/businessCNY 24,000 per yearConfirm the programme category; same application/insurance reference
SISU Intensive Chinese, 2026 referenceCNY 17,000 per semester + CNY 500 applicationHistorical intake; confirm 2027 before payment

These are official examples for the specified route and year, not a Noka quotation or total cost of living. Programme-specific exceptions and future updates prevail.

Requirements depend on the university, programme, intake and your circumstances.

FAQ

Are Noka’s displayed fees the total cost of studying in China?

No. They are optional consultation or application-support fees. Tuition, official charges, tests, visas, housing and travel are separate.
