Scholarship Annual Review in China: Keeping Funding After Year One

Understand how academic progress, registration and annual review can affect the continuation of a China scholarship.

What you need to know

Initial selection does not guarantee support until graduation. Annual review can assess progress, attendance and conduct as well as marks; missed review submission can itself have consequences. Use the scheme and university’s actual continuation procedure.

Annual review is a separate decision from initial selection

SJTU’s guidance normally places review in April and describes three stages: student self-assessment, school review and university review. Continuing scholarship holders must use the correct channel; the page distinguishes CSC, other university-administered awards and TDLI procedures.

It also says failure to submit before the due date defaults to cancellation in that review. A student with strong marks could therefore still lose support through an incomplete process. The April pattern does not announce the precise 2027 deadline, which must come from the relevant notice.

The evidence should exist before the review window

A practical review file includes the actual academic record, research progress and any attendance or conduct evidence requested. Beijing and Shanghai frameworks expressly consider more than marks. A research student should retain a realistic account of completed work, not manufacture publications when the form opens.

A plan delayed by failed experiments can still be explained honestly with revised milestones, but this article does not claim an automatic pass for that situation. The university’s assessment determines continuation. The initial award letter is not evidence that later conditions have been met.

Put this guide into practice

Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.

Know the financial effect before the next academic year

The cited SJTU guidance allows suspension or cancellation and conversion to self-funded study after an unsatisfactory result. Beijing’s framework also allows category adjustment. UCAS’s own notice conditions support on the required reviews and examinations.

Before a leave of absence, withdrawal or programme change, resolve both academic approval and funding consequences. Keeping those decisions separate helps avoid a student returning to find an assumed stipend no longer available. A budget for the remaining degree should include the possibility of a changed category, not just repeat the first-year amount.

Annual review is a continuing-student decision

SJTU’s published review guidance describes student self-assessment followed by school and university review, usually around April. UCAS also links continued funding to review. Each scheme can adjust or end support under its own rules.

Collect evidence throughout the academic year

Save transcripts, progress reports and any required attendance evidence throughout the year. Research students should agree milestones with their supervisor. Passing admission selection is different from meeting continuing-student obligations.

FAQ

Does receiving the initial award guarantee funding in the next academic year?

No. Continuing support can depend on annual review and the award’s other conditions. Use the host’s rules for the relevant scheme and cohort rather than relying only on the first admission letter.
