TDLI Scholarships: Top-Ups, Insurance and Arrival Cash Flow

SJTU’s Tsung-Dao Lee Institute explains supplementary funding, payment timing and insurance separately.

What you need to know

TDLI supplements eligible support without duplicating the same funding category. Its described first autumn transfer can take two to three months, and medical insurance is separate. An approved top-up is not permission to stack every scholarship.

A top-up fills the permitted gap rather than stacking every benefit

TDLI describes supplementary support where applicable when a student also receives a government, Shanghai or SJTU scholarship, bringing total support to the TDLI standard without duplicating a funding category. The important question is therefore which expense or payment overlaps.

Arithmetic illustration only: if an approved support standard were CNY 5000 and eligible existing support were CNY 3000 in the same calculation, the gap would be CNY 2000, not another full CNY 5000. The CNY 5000 figure is invented solely for this labelled arithmetic example; it is not a published TDLI rate.

The first transfer needs an arrival reserve

The institutional description generally puts the first autumn transfer two to three months after enrolment, including eligible accrued support from enrolment through December. It pays into the student’s own Chinese bank account. An overseas family account is not the specified destination.

Banking information, registration and the required check-ins must therefore be completed even if the award is already confirmed. The published timing is guidance, not an exact arrival-day guarantee. Keep funds for the period before the first transfer, rather than treating accrued support as cash already available.

Put this guide into practice

Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.

  • Insurance cover, exclusions and claim procedure
  • Check-in condition and the first actual payment date

TDLI insurance and later payments have separate conditions

The described TDLI institutional scholarship excludes medical insurance, which the student purchases separately. Continuing students must pass annual review and complete monthly in-person check-in; the page names March and June quarterly payments and leaves later payments to the university’s financial schedule.

A missing transfer should be checked against account details, check-in, status and the relevant schedule. It should not immediately be described as loss of the scholarship. Conversely, study suspension or withdrawal can stop eligibility, so neither a previous payment nor a top-up formula guarantees indefinite support.

TDLI supplementary support is not duplicate funding

TDLI permits supplementary support without duplicating the same funding category, to reach its stated support standard. This is not a universal permission to combine awards. Other schemes can expressly prohibit concurrent funding.

First payment and insurance need separate planning

Its guidance says a first payment generally takes two to three months after enrolment, with later quarterly disbursement. Students need their own Chinese bank account. Medical insurance is not included in the TDLI scholarship described there.

FAQ

Does TDLI’s supplement mean I can collect every scholarship amount independently?

No. The cited arrangement supplements support to the institute’s standard without duplicating the same funding category. Read the actual calculation and each award’s restrictions before combining figures.
