How Much Is the Chinese Government Scholarship Worth?

Understand CSC’s stipend and separate tuition, housing and insurance benefits before building your study budget.

What you need to know

The verified full CGS living rates are CNY 2500, 3000 and 3500 monthly by category. Tuition and housing support are not extra personal cash. Payment timing and insurance coverage must be budgeted separately.

Funding at a glance

Bachelor’s
CNY 2,500 / per month
Master’s / General Scholar
CNY 3,000 / per month
Doctoral / Senior Scholar
CNY 3,500 / per month

Current full CGS baseline. Tuition and accommodation support are not cash paid entirely to the student. Actual award and disbursement rules apply.

A stipend calculation is not a total scholarship valuation

The CGS living allowance is CNY 2500, 3000 or 3500 per month depending on the study category. If a master’s student receives 12 full monthly payments at the verified CNY 3000 rate, the arithmetic is CNY 36000. That is a conditional calculation, not a promise of an advance payment or a new annual funding rule.

Tuition and accommodation support must not be added to that cash figure as if they were also deposited in the student’s account. They reduce particular costs. The distinction matters when comparing a package with a tuition-only offer or when estimating how much food and transport can be bought each month.

Insurance pays for cover rather than unrestricted treatment

The central guide lists insurance funding of CNY 800 per person per year, or CNY 400 for eligible programmes shorter than six months. These amounts purchase the relevant policy; they are not an allowance that can be used for groceries. Policy exclusions and claims procedures still determine what medical costs are reimbursed.

TDLI provides a useful contrast: its described institutional scholarship excludes medical insurance. That does not remove insurance from a separate full CSC package. It shows why the actual scheme name must be identified before reading the word scholarship as one uniform set of benefits.

Put this guide into practice

Create a short record for your intended programme. Add the relevant notice or document beside each item; leave unpublished details marked “to confirm”.

  • Cash stipend separated from tuition and housing support
  • Check-in condition and the first actual payment date
  • Payments due before enrolment or the first stipend

Cash-flow timing can be more important than the monthly rate

SJTU’s cited schedule makes October 2026 sign-in relevant to the November payment. TDLI describes a different first-payment pattern, generally two to three months after enrolment. Neither establishes payment on arrival for every university.

Illustrative reserve calculation: if personal monthly expenses were CNY 2000 and no stipend were accessible for two months, living-cost reserves alone would be CNY 4000. Flights, deposits and registration charges would be separate. CNY 2000 is an assumed budget in this example, not a researched city-wide price or an official allowance.

Tuition waivers and accommodation are not cash

A tuition waiver removes covered charges; it is not tuition money deposited into your bank account. Accommodation is normally a university dormitory or approved accommodation support under the applicable rules. A private apartment, premium room or extra semester may have separate conditions. Read the individual award and housing instructions before estimating how much spending money remains.

Stipend and insurance serve different purposes

The living stipend is the cash component intended to help with everyday expenses. Its actual payment follows registration and host procedures. Comprehensive medical insurance is generally funded at CNY 800 per person per year, or CNY 400 for qualifying programmes shorter than six months. Insurance funding does not mean every medical expense is reimbursed: coverage and exclusions still apply.

FAQ

Can I spend the tuition portion of a full CSC award on living costs?

No. A tuition waiver covers eligible university charges rather than adding that amount to your personal bank balance. The living stipend is a different component, and its payment follows the applicable registration and disbursement rules.

Is CNY 36000 guaranteed to arrive at the start of a master’s scholarship?

No. It is 12 multiplied by the CNY 3000 monthly rate, conditional on 12 full eligible payments. Registration, funding duration and disbursement rules determine the actual payment schedule.
